It is pretty difficult to get sandboxed. As long as your not spamming link directorys, and showing to many backlinks real quick, you should be fine.

Only through spamming your site gets sand boxed. If you are competing for a competitive keyword, it is advisable to get authority back links to get to the top position in search engines.

After a a coule of days and upto a couple of weeks it can ride at a high position. If it isn’t popular it falls back to where it would have without the boost. Sometimes it seems like a new site won’t rank.

The sandbox effect is much less than it used to be as there are many other more powerful metrics in the search algorithms today. However new sites do still get an initial boost. The time you are in it is not determined. 6 months is a very rough guide, again though, the effects are very minimal now compared to a few years ago.
